Major Arcana cards:V The Hierophant

Religion, Tradition, Guidance, Ritual

Card Interpretation

He is an authority in religion and spirituality. He will always show us a spiritual path forward; with his compassion and virtue, he will surely guide us away from wrongdoings, leading us to confront our conscience and embrace the truth that we can right our past mistakes.

Especially when you are weighed down by guilt, he will always be willing to listen patiently to your confession.

This is a card symbolizing the awakening of conscience and kindness, as well as one representing religious faith and tradition. In contrast to the Emperor, who rules over the material realm, he leans more toward the spiritual sphere. He is an authority of the spirit and an interpreter of the unknown world. Since the Hierophant can communicate directly with the Divine, he strives to redeem mortal souls with compassion and insight, guiding people onto the righteous path through his teachings.

On the card, the Hierophant holds his hands high to spread the doctrine to the masses, while devout believers kneel on the ground, listening reverently to his words. Yet it is important to note that he also stands for traditional knowledge and conservative morality—he can constrain people’s thinking and narrow their perspectives. Only by completely letting go of outdated conventions and exploring new solutions can there be hope for progress.

The Hierophant is the earthly manifestation of divine truth, serving as a bridge between heaven and humanity. His three-tiered crown symbolizes the integration of the physical, emotional, and spiritual realms, and his crozier represents the elevation of these three aspects. The believers at his feet signify submission and pure intentions, while the red robe he wears embodies passion. With his right hand, the Hierophant channels celestial energy, making him a figure of reliance for the world. Little do people realize that the Hierophant’s true message is that every individual is their own light. Ultimately, the Hierophant symbolizes "surrender".

Upright Position

When drawn upright, the card signifies: Guidance, compassion, magnanimity, trustworthy advice, a good confidant, spiritual fulfillment, adherence to rules, volunteerism. You are full of confidence and can perceive the true essence of things. However, excessive external pressure at work may leave you feeling constrained. It is advisable to seek new ways of working—though you will face strong resistance, the outcome will prove your efforts worthwhile. In relationships, submitting to others’ pressure and blindly changing yourself to meet their demands only seems like a necessary sacrifice; in reality, it is a forced choice. Your partner will not remain loyal to you, and it will be difficult to satisfy the genuine needs of both parties.

Reversed Position

When drawn reversed, the card signifies: Misinformation, malicious advice, deception, interrupted assistance, unfulfilled desires, being exploited, abandonment. In your career, you adopt a more flexible attitude—no longer rigidly following outdated methods, you dare to innovate and form your own unique philosophy, living and working in alignment with your true beliefs. In relationships, you begin to face your genuine feelings and actions squarely. While you still listen to your partner’s opinions, you no longer accept them entirely. When you find their views unacceptable, you will communicate promptly to figure out ways to improve the relationship.

Taurus

Taurus corresponds to the Hierophant card in Tarot.

The Hierophant is strongly associated with religion. Taureans typically adhere rigidly to conventions—they are stubborn and conservative.
